Donald Richard Fletcher was born on March 9, 1925, in Berkeley, Illinois, the fifth out of the six children of parents Anne and Joseph Fletcher. Donald graduated from Proviso Township High School in 1943 before being drafted into the United States Army during World War II.
Following the war, Donald studied engineering at Columbia University in New York City with support from the GI Bill. It was at Columbia that he met Betty. They were married at Trinity Episcopal Church in Betty’s hometown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on March 9, 1951.
Betty and Don began their lives together in his home state of Illinois. They welcomed their first child, Barbara, in 1952, followed by Richard in 1954, Catherine in 1957, Jeffrey in 1958, and Douglas in 1960.
During their time in Lombard, Illinois, Betty and Don were active members of Calvary Episcopal Church before transitioning to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church when they moved to Butterfield Estates. Don was proud to be both a lay reader and a choir member wherever he attended.
Don continued working as an engineer with various companies, including Argonne National Laboratories, while attending Northwestern University to obtain his master's in engineering.
Betty died from cancer in 1980 and in1995 Don relocated to Mount Vernon, Illinois, where he became an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church and the church choir.
Over the years, Don enjoyed listening to classical music, writing letters to friends and family, and writing poetry.
Just a few weeks shy of his 101st birthday, Don passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026, in Mount Vernon.
He is survived by his children, Catherine (Daniel Graves), Jeffrey Fletcher, Douglas Fletcher, along with son-in-law Jack Minster and daughter-in-law Marge Fletcher. He was blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
